Discord Username Rules: Length, Characters, and Display Names

Know which Discord name you are changing

The unique username is used for friend requests and identity checks. It is forced to lowercase and must be unique. Your display name is more flexible and is usually the prominent name other people see in direct messages and servers.

Server nicknames can override the display name inside a specific server. That means one account can have a strict, easy-to-type username and still use a more expressive public name where Discord supports it.

Apply the current unique username rules

Discord's official guidance says unique usernames contain 2 to 32 characters. They may use lowercase Latin letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Other symbols and non-Latin scripts belong in the display-name field instead.

• Use a-z, 0-9, underscore, or period only
• Do not use two consecutive periods
• Expect uppercase letters to be converted to lowercase
• Keep a second spelling ready because every username is unique

Build a username that friends can type

Start with one clear root such as nova, kage, orbit, or pixel. If it is taken, add one short word, a meaningful number, an underscore, or a single period. Avoid long random number strings because they are difficult to remember and say aloud.

Test the candidate in a friend-request sentence. If someone can hear it once and type it correctly, it is doing the main job of a Discord username.

Verify availability inside Discord

A format check cannot prove availability, reservation status, or moderation approval. Save two or three candidates, then test the exact lowercase spelling in Discord under User Settings and My Account.

Never enter your Discord password or session token into a third-party username checker. The official app is the authoritative place to claim or change the username.
